Everything from the air we breathe to the food we eat, to the water we swim in, the houses we live in and places we work in....all of these things affect our well being. Working in environmental, we're here to protect the public's health and improve their general quality of life.

Come and join us - help to make a difference

''The air we breathe, the water we bathe in, the noise we tolerate, the land we build on....all of these things affect human health. That's why environmental health is now so high on the political agenda.  Environmental health practitioners (EHPs) play a central role in putting UK and European laws into action and raising public awareness''

An increasingly vital part of the work of EHPs is food safety and hygiene in all the places where food is prepared, handled, stored and served, whether this is in a roadside cafe or a five star hotel. Whilst working to protect and improve the health of the public, EHP's can work with the police, investigating people supplying unfit meat. They also have a role to play in advising people on how to enjoy a healthier life style and improve their health.

''Our health can be affected by many things besides disease. The environment we live in, the job we do, the food we eat, the lifestyle we live. We no longer measure 'health' just in terms of death and disease, but also in connection with quality of life.''

EHPs inspect and advise on housing conditions and on the clearance of unfit properties. They work to ensure that standards are met in relation to rented properties particularly in deprived areas. Checks range from overcrowding to a lack of amenities and also that the property is safe for people to live in. Good housing is fundamental to health; an EHP can be directly responsible for improvements in areas where poor housing is prevent.

''Even today, about 500 people every year are killed at work, and several hundred thousand more injured. Applying our normal principle that prevention is better than cure, EHPs are mainly concerned with offering advice in safeguarding employees and the public.''
