Influencing Skills Session - East Midlands Regional Programme of Policy Events for Councillors

As part of the Regional Programme of Briefing Events East Midlands Councils is offering Councillors subscribed to the programme the opportunity to attend a skills based seminar on influencing.

This workshop has been designed to complement the wider policy briefing programme with a skills focused session recognising the importance of influence in the political context.

When you think about it, the most challenging part of being a councillor can be trying to influence others. In fact you can waste a lot of time and energy trying to persuade the public, officers or colleagues to accept your ideas, or change their position on a matter.

This seminar is a rare opportunity to develop your influencing skills to a higher level. By doing so, you will be able to increase your effectiveness and persuasion ability. We will draw upon skills, strategies and influencing techniques stemming from the birth of democracy right up to the modern day, including the latest scientific research. Ultimately the seminar is very practical, and designed so that you can transfer your learning and skills to your role.

The training is about positively influencing other people-not manipulating them (although it will help you to avoid being manipulated by others).

Seminar Content

  • The ethics of influence and persuasion.
  • How are you perceived? Strength V Warmth.
  • Advanced rapport skills.
  • Non-verbal behaviour which influences communication.
  • The three means of persuasion.
  • Understanding the fundamental influencing styles.
  • Using the classic persuasion triggers.
