Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children Age Assessment Training
East Midlands Councils are holding a one day event on Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children — Age Assessments. This practical event will cover the legislative background to asylum claims; look at the relevant guidelines applicable; look at the Merton and other relevant decisions, and the issues involved in preparation for the assessment and then the assessment itself.
The aim of the event is to familiarise attendees with the relevant guidance and legislation relevant to age assessment, including grounds for asylum; to enable them to be confident in withstanding challenges to an assessment.
Content of the day
The session will cover:
- When and why to assess: decisions of the courts and tribunal
- Current UKVI/Home Office Guidance
- The process of assessment
- Practice and pitfalls
Who should attend?
The training is aimed at Local Authority Children’s Services: Social Workers and others involved in the age assessment process.
Pat Munro – Pat is a former child care and family solicitor and part time immigration judge; former Chair of Association of Lawyers for Children and Children Sub-Committee of Law Society; currently trainer and volunteer lawyer at Refugee Action Kingston.
