Opun runs the Regional Design Review Panel in the East Midlands, supported by RIBA, RTPI, RICS, EMC, the HCA, ATLAS, English Heritage and others. Opun is the lead architecture centre nationally on the refresh of Building for Life12. Using a collaborative approach with developers, design teams and local authorities, Opun independently support design-led discussions between developers, planning teams and communities.
Working with EMC, Opun led the 2013/14 Design Support package that helped deliver the establishment of a Local Design Review Panel for Lincoln City Council in association with the University of Lincoln School of Architecture. Opun also supported Derby City Council’s public realm strategy in its city centre, as well as delivered bespoke urban design training to members, officers and community representatives.
The 2014/15, subscription package again offers independent bespoke design advice to those that require that individual support. However, we are responding to feedback from several local authorities that wish to better support capacity within their planning teams on issues relating to quality of place and design uplift.
Opun is offering an affordable training package that will assist planning officers in being better prepared to hold discussions on urban design, design viability, layout and highway issues. There are two training offers: design masterclasses for officers, and design sessions for elected members.
ONE – Design Masterclasses
Opun is fortunate in working with some of the best architects, landscape architects, urban designers and other built environment specialists in the region and nationally. The training will suit officers involved in development management and policy. The masterclasses will be led by experts in their field, will be CPD certified, and will allow officers to leave the class confident in approaching discussions on design matters in effectively delivering their local authority’s quality expectations.
The cost of the annual package from 1st April 2014 will be £895.00 for 10 delegate places across the range of masterclasses (limited to 2 delegates per local authority per event), and each masterclass will be held in different venues across the region. Opun will be working with EMC to deliver this training, which will rely on at least 15 local authorities signing up to achieve it. If demand is high enough we can respond to needs and repeat sessions or add more:
- Urban Design Fundamentals
- Masterplanning & Viability
- Delivering good quality housing
- Streets and Parking
- Public Realm and the High Street
TWO – Member Training
Opun has also delivered several member training sessions, but two taster presentations are also on offer at a very affordable rate. Opun's experience suggests that a good introduction to Design and Quality issues can support a member's appreciation of how to recognise better quality schemes. Targeted at the needs of a Planning Committee, Opun is offering two presentations for £395.00 on:
- Quality of Place, and
- Better Streets.
THREE – Overall Package
The subscription service costs will remain the same as last year at £3,600.00 to include the above training offers as well as other more individually targeted services. The subscription remains flexible and bespoke responding to urban design needs within your local authority; as well as offering reduced cost design review and enabling, it could also support procurement, design policy preparation, community engagement or public art commissions.
An expression of interest pro-forma is available for download below. This offer is only open to councils that are members of EMC. Governance and administration will be provided by EMC who also sit on OPUN’s wider Reference Group OPUN:connect: http://www.opun.org.uk/about-us/our-partners/.
