Council leaders unite to support the Midland Main Line

Key council leaders from across the East Midlands have united to support proposals to upgrade and electrify the Midland Main Line in a joint letter to Rail Minister Theresa Villiers MP.

The letter was sent under the banner of East Midlands Councils, the collective body for councils in the East Midlands, and signed by:

Cllr David Parsons CBE (Leader of Leicestershire County Council),
Cllr Jon Collins (Leader of Nottingham City Council),
Cllr Rory Palmer (Deputy Mayor of Leicester),
Cllr Andrew Lewer (Leader of Derbyshire County Council),
Cllr Philip Hickson (Leader of Derby City Council),
Cllr Kay Cutts (Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council)
Cllr Jim Harker (Leader of Northamptonshire County Council)

The council leaders are calling on the Government to include rail industry proposals to upgrade and electrify the midland main line in the next 5 year investment plan (2014-19), to be announced in July 2012.

The letter coincides with an ‘adjournment debate’ on the Midland Main Line secured by Nicky Morgan MP (Loughborough), which will take place in the House of Commons later today (16 April 2012), and the launch of a new campaign web-site

Cllr David Parsons CBE, Chair of East Midlands Councils said

“This investment is vital to the economy of the East Midlands. We are working closely with MPs, business leaders and councils to make sure that Ministers understand the strength of our case”
