EMC welcomes transport ‘pinch-point’ funding - but looks to the bigger picture

East Midlands Councils has welcomed the Government’s announcement of £16 million to address five transport ‘pinch-points’ that impact on parts of the East Midlands – but is also looking at the bigger picture.

The schemes recently announced by the Department for Transport include the A45 Wilby Way improvements (Wellingborough), the A43/A45 Tove junction improvements (supporting development in Towcester and Silverstone), the M40 J10 improvement (south of Brackley), the M1 J24 A50 approach improvement (Derby) and the A38 Markeaton improvements (Derby).

Cllr Jim Harker, Chair of EMC’s Infrastructure Task & Finish Group said:

“These schemes are a very welcome boost to our local economy - but we also need to look at the bigger picture.  That is why I have agreed to chair EMC’s new Infrastructure Group to build the case for infrastructure investments that can unlock the region’s potential and the wider strategic agenda.”

Cllr Paul Bayliss, Vice-Chair of EMCs Infrastructure Task and Finish Group said:

“Welcome as these schemes are, we must do more. The recent Midland Main Line campaign shows what can be achieved when councils, MPs and business groups all pull together.  We need to take the same approach for other forms of infrastructure, including broadband and flood defences as well as transport.”

EMC’s Infrastructure Task & Finish Group has been charged with identifying and promoting a limited number of strategic infrastructure priorities that will help unlock the economic potential of the East Midlands. It will meet for the first time on the 9 November 2012.
