East Midlands Councils supports the saving of The East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre (EMCHC), at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester

East Midlands Councils, which represents all 46 Local Authorities in the region, has whole-heartedly supported the campaign to keep the centre open. It supported Option A which was one of four options.

The centre, which already serves a population of around 5 million, is under threat as part of a national review which aims to close some of the surgical centres across the country.

If any of the other three options are taken forward the surgical centre at Glenfield would close and children would not be able to receive heart operations in the region.  The consultation will close on July 1st.

Councillor David Parsons, Chair of East Midlands Councils, said “We are committed to try and keep this vitally important centre open. The Centre serves all parts of the East Midlands and we must all do our best to maintain this service for children.

“As we said at our last East Midlands Councils Board meeting ‘A continued role for Glenfield as one of the selected specialist surgical centres would maintain the existing technical excellence which the unit is able to deliver, and safeguard access to services for patients within the East Midlands.’ A view we still endorse.”
