Implementing welfare reform in the East Midlands

A top Whitehall civil servant is heading up to the East Midlands to discuss with council leaders and senior officials the implementation of the Government’s Welfare Reform Act.

Jeremy Groombridge, Director of Universal Credit at the Department of Work and Pensions will be the key note speaker at a regional event taking place at the offices of Rushcliffe Borough Council on the 8th May 2012. Other speakers will include Alan Graham, Rushcliffe’s Chief Executive, who has been working at a national level with Government on welfare reform issues.

The event has been organised by East Midlands Councils, the consultative forum for councils in the East Midlands, and will focus on managing the practical implications of the changes for councils and local communities. It follows a wide ranging debate on welfare reform by councillors at the last EMC Executive meeting on the 23 March 2012.

EMC’s Strategic Programme Manager Jan Sensier said:

“Councils have a key role to play in the implementation of the Welfare Reform Act. If we are to simplify the system and increase incentives for work, we need to work closely with Government to get it right. There are a number of practical issues that we need to discuss, including implementation timescales, the use of the internet to access payments, and links with other Government initiatives.”

The event is open to all councils in EMC membership.
