LEPs welcomed in the East Midlands

The Government announced today (28th October 2010) the successful bids for the establishment of Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs). A White Paper was presented to Parliament at the same time.

Stuart Young, Executive Director of East Midlands Councils, welcomed the announcement saying, “There has been an incredible amount of hard work put into the preparation of these bids. With this announcement the LEPs can now focus on how they will support private sector led growth and prosperity.

“We congratulate those LEPs that have had initial approval from the Government.”

The successful bids from the East Midlands were from:

  1. Leicester City and Leicestershire County.
  2. Derby City, Derbyshire County, Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County.
  3. Lincolnshire.
  4. Greater Cambridge, Greater Peterborough and Rutland
  5. Sheffield City Region, including Bassetlaw District, Chesterfield Borough and North East Derbyshire District.
  6. South East Midlands including Corby Borough, Daventry Borough, Kettering Borough, Northampton Borough and South Northamptonshire District.

Local Enterprise Partnerships will promote local economic growth taking on some of the functions of Regional Development Agencies. There are a number of issues to be resolved in the establishment of Local Enterprise Partnerships including their legal status, funding, functions and the potential transfer of Regional Development Agencies’ assets.

East Midlands Councils will continue to support Councils in the transition towards Local Enterprise Partnerships.
