Consultation on East Midlands Rail Franchise

Train services are important to the East Midlands connecting people to jobs and training, for leisure and retail trips too.  East Midland Councils is keen to see the region better served by rail than it is now, better connections to and between our main cities as well as to other regions like London, Birmingham, Manchester and Yorkshire.

The Department for Transport are holding consultation events on the franchise across the area served by East Midlands Trains, at the following times and places with the region:

  • Lincoln, 30 August 2017, 3pm to 5pm

  • Derby, 31 August 2017, 11am to 1pm

  • Nottingham, 7 September 2017, 11am to 1pm

  • Kettering, 13 September 2017, 2pm to 4pm

  • Leicester, 21 September 2017, 11am to 1pm

To support consideration and responses to this consultation, East Midlands Councils has published a draft response on our website which people are welcome to download and use as a basis for their response.  We are clear the region needs improved connectivity by train, more comfort and space for passengers on trains, improved customer service and more flexible ticketing offering better value for money.

EMC is also concerned that the franchise is further delayed to August 2019. This delay must not hold back investment plans in new and better trains.

EMC is very concerned about the decision not to electrify the Midland Mainline north to Nottingham and Sheffield. Diesel/Electric train are a poor solution, it puts regional jobs at risk and does not tackle poor air quality in the larger cities.

Cllr Roger Blaney, EMC Executive Board Member, “I really encourage businesses, stakeholders and rail users across the region to participate in the consultation, helping us make the case for more services, larger trains, a 7 day service offer providing better quality for customers. I hope publishing EMC’s draft consultation response document will support people in sharing their views with Government…… if we want to secure better train services across the East Midlands we must make our views known to the Department for Transport”.
