Council leaders meet to tackle growth and infrastructure challenges

The first meeting of a high level group charged with tackling growth and infrastructure challenges across the East Midlands took place today (9 November 2012)

The ‘Infrastructure Group’ has been established by East Midlands Councils, the collective body for local councils in the East Midlands.  It will be chaired by Cllr Jim Harker OBE, Leader of Northamptonshire County Council.  Cllr Paul Bayliss, Leader of Derby City Council is the Vice Chairman.

The group also includes Mayor Tony Egginton from Mansfield, Andrew Bacon, Chair of the Leicester and Leicestershire Local Enterprise Partnership and Adrian Coy representing the Institute of Civil Engineers, as well as a number of senior council directors from around the East Midlands.

The first meeting also included a presentation a senior Treasury official responsible for driving forward infrastructure delivery at the national level.

The group agreed to produce a ‘Growth Prospectus’ for ministers and senior business leaders in time for the next full meeting of East Midlands Councils on the 15th  February 2013.

Cllr Jim Harker OBE said

“We must improve our infrastructure if we are to fully realise the economic potential that exists across the East Midlands. The challenge for us is to present a compelling business case for investment from both the public and private sector to make it happen.”

Cllr Paul Bayliss said

“The experience of the Midland Main Line Campaign shows what we can achieve when we work together. We need to demonstrate clearly how strategic infrastructure investment can benefit our local economies to get the message across.”
