Opportunities for Councillors Autumn 2014

EMC is offering a variety of development opportunities this autumn/winter, designed to support Councillors in their roles. This Councillor Development Newsletter provides an overview of the opportunities available to Councillors in the East Midlands provided by East Midlands Councils in November and December 2014.

Decision Making and Effective Problem Solving, 14 November

The aim of this workshop is for you to become more aware of your decision making capacity and to become a more effective problem solver. During the workshop we will have a number of practical sessions in which you will be able to learn about the MBTI instrument and also apply the instrument to decision making situations.

The Future of Local Government and Public Services in the next Parliament, 21 November

An overview and update of current and emerging policies across the political spectrum ahead of the 2015 General Election

Chaired by political editor for BBC East Midlands John Hess, confirmed speakers include Kris Hopkins MP (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Communities and Local Government); Andy Sawford (Shadow Minister, Communities and Local Government); Professor Tony Travers (LSE) and Graham Allen MP (Chairman, Political and Constitutional Reform Committee).

An Introduction to Local Government Finance, 3 December This seminar will look at the implications of these longer term trends as well as the impact of the Comprehensive Spending Review for 2015/16.The seminar will cover the major changes to local government finance that came into operation in April 2013: the localisation of Business Rates and the expectation of councils generating local economic growth to help fund services.

Action Planning for Councillors using Action Learning, 11 December East Midlands Councils is running a free action planning session, which will provide an opportunity for Councillors to experience directly how action learning works and understand what the benefits are of working with fellow Councillors using action learning to make progress on issues. The taster session will allow each Councillor the time to work on an issue they wish to make progress on.  By the end of the session each Councillor will have been able to develop an action plan unique to their issue.

The Future Role of Scrutiny, 12 December East Midlands Councils is holding a half day event for Councillors and Officers involved with Scrutiny, which will explore the impact of the current and likely future financial and policy environment for local government on the role of overview and scrutiny.
