Councils Back Campaign to Save Region's Heart Centre at Glenfield

At EMC’s Annual General Meeting, council leaders from across the East Midlands unanimously called for NHS England to immediately review and reverse its recent announcement that it plans to end the commissioning of children’s heart surgery at Glenfield Hospital.

These proposals are despite the East Midlands Congenital Heart Unit at Glenfield being recognised by the national health watchdog as providing “excellent clinical outcomes for children following cardiac surgery”. 

The impacts of the decisions are far-reaching and threaten:

  • The loss of one of the country’s best performing children’s heart surgery units.
  • Losing more than half of the paediatric beds in Leicester; with a ‘knock-on’ effect that will affect the vast majority of other types of children’s surgery and specialised treatment not just in Leicester but the wider region – meaning more children and more families will have to travel significant distances to access critical medical care.
  • Loss of expertise and staff – in a region with already disproportionately low rates of recruitment and retention of skilled medical staff.
  • The inevitable closure of the country’s largest ECMO unit. 

Cllr Robert Parker, who proposed the motion and is Leader of EMC Labour Political Group says, “Councils across the region have huge concerns about these proposals and at the very least call on NHS England to review this decision and to properly consult with not just the health trusts, but also with the wider public who are the ones directly affected”.

Cllr David Slater, Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, who backed the motion and further commented that, “the East Midlands Congenital Heart Unit at Glenfield is one of the country’s best – it delivers excellent clinical outcomes and is key not just for children’s heart services but also for many other types of children’s surgery and specialised treatment across the East Midlands”.
