HS2 critical to our economic future - But local impacts must be addressed

Local Leaders have reaffirmed support for HS2 in the East Midlands, but stressed the importance of making sure that local people affected by the route are dealt with fairly.

The East Midlands HS2 Growth Strategy sets out proposals to use HS2 connectivity to create an additional 74,000 jobs and £4 billion of GVA. Key developments include:

  • A new integrated HS2 and Network Rail ‘Hub Station’ at Toton with fast local connections to Derby, Nottingham, Leicester and East Midlands Airport – the best connected HS2 Station outside London;
  • A new mixed use ‘Innovation Campus’ at adjacent to the Hub Station linked to new ‘Garden Villages’ at nearby Stanton and Chetwynd Barracks;
  • HS2 connectivity for Chesterfield Station, linked to major regeneration of the town centre and former industrial areas;
  • A new HS2 Infrastructure Maintenance Depot at Staveley that will help generate thousands of new local engineering jobs.

HS2 Ltd have today published a ‘Working Draft Environmental Statement’ which describes the environmental impact of the line and initial proposals for how those impacts should be dealt with. The document will be subject to public consultation for 10 weeks.

Cllr Jon Collins, Chair of the East Midlands HS2 Strategic Board said:

"The Eastern leg of HS2 will link Birmingham with Leeds via the East Midlands, and provides a high speed link to Scotland via the East Coast Main Line. It has the best economic case of any part of the HS2 network – but we must ensure that the environmental impacts on our communities and businesses are properly dealt with. The public consultation launched by HS2 Ltd today is an important stage in the development of the project, and we want to make sure that the concerns of local people are heard."
