The Impact of International Migration in the East Midlands

The East Midlands All Party Parliamentary Group (EM-APPG) supported by East Midlands Councils held a meeting at Westminster on Monday 9 June to consider the nature and patterns of international migration in the region, highlight the specific challenges facing communities and public service providers and to highlight a number of recommendations to Government. The meeting was chaired by Chris Heaton-Harris MP, Co-Chair of the EM-APPG; with contributions from Cllr Paul Kenny, Boston Borough Council and Chairman of the Regional Migration Partnership and Cllr Jon Collins, Chair of East Midlands Councils and Leader of Nottingham City Council.

Over 40 delegates attended EMC’s knowledge briefing session for councillors this week on the ‘Impact of Migration in the East Midlands’.  Chaired by Cllr Paul Kenny, Chair of the East Midlands Strategic Migration Partnership. Topics covered forthcoming legislative changes, how the sector is responding to the impact of migration, and creating the conditions for integration. Practical workshops included Boston Borough Council's award winning scrutiny review on the ‘Social Impact of Population Change’ and ‘Understanding Destitution’. Feedback from the event was excellent with delegates reporting that it was "thoroughly worthwhile and of value"; "excellent and very thought provoking”; with “excellent content and very good speakers".

Key points raised at both events will be used to inform a major EMC report on the ‘Impact of International Migration on the East Midlands’ which will be launched at the EMC AGM on the 18th July 2014.
