Exploring the Learning from Supervision

EMC is offering Coaches across the East Midlands the opportunity take part in Coaching Supervision.

“Supervision” as a word can have overtones of someone looking over your shoulder to see what you are doing – right or wrong; so it can put off coaches who want to explore learning from practical experience. This workshop will explore a little theory around supervision, ask coaches to participate in some practical exploration through discussing their experiences via an action learning process, and to reflect on what they have learnt. In the time available, we will look at 2 different process styles in group supervision and compare the learning from each.

Coaching supervision is an essential part of any coaching practice and helps to maintain the professional competence of individual coaches. Through reflective practice and sharing experiences with a small group of other coaches, this helps the coach grow, develop and be the best they can be. It also assists them to identify areas for further learning and development.

EM Coaching - Exploring the Learning from Supervision 13 October 2017

Supervision helps coaches to:

  • strengthen their coaching skills and knowledge, and deepen their self–awareness
  • handle challenging coaching situations
  • pay attention to the ethics of coaching

Group supervision allows coaches to reflect on their own coaching practice and issues and feel validated by the reactions of others. Also, by observing others in a safe, non-judgmental environment and by monitoring their own reactions as others are discussing coaching issues, this provides a space for the coach to reflect and gain additional insights into their own practice.

Some typical areas covered in supervision:

  • their frustrations with coachees
  • their concern that they are not doing it well enough
  • unexpected emotional responses either within the coach or in the coachee
  • ethical/moral dilemmas

The Facilitator - Kate Pinder

Kate Pinder is a qualified and experienced supervisor, using peer, one to one and group supervision, both in her own learning and in her professional practice with others. She works with in house coaches and those practising privately, and is an ILM (all 3 levels) assessor and external verifier.
