Action Planning for Councillors using Action Learning

East Midlands Councils is running a free action planning session, which will provide an opportunity for Councillors to experience directly how action learning works and understand what the benefits are of working with fellow Councillors using action learning to make progress on issues.

The taster session will allow each Councillor the time to work on an issue they wish to make progress on.  By the end of the session each Councillor will have been able to develop an action plan unique to their issue.

Places on this action planning session are limited to 8, which will ensure that each Councillor has dedicated time and space to work through their specific issue using action learning, in the busy world of a Councillor a unique opportunity!

This half day session aims to enable Councillors to understand the principles of Action Learning and how individuals and authorities can benefit from the positive and empowering impact, that working within an Action Learning set can provide.   

By the end of the session participants will:

  • Have had the opportunity to work on their own issue using Action Learning and will have been able to develop an action plan to tackle their identified issue
  • Understand the principles of action learning
  • Reflect on the benefits of being part of an action learning set
  • Understand and experience the role and impact of questioning insight in understanding problems presented (and how to deal with future problems)
  • Reflect on their future action learning needs

What are the benefits of action learning?

  • provides an opportunity for individuals to make progress on a current challenge
  • techniques to aid in the understanding of current and future issues
  • provides a supportive, yet challenging environment
  • development of skills such as;
    • Problem solving
    • Critical reflection
    • Questioning insight
    • Giving and receiving support
  • Way of working that enables people to work productively together on solving problems

What is action learning?

Action Learning is a reflective and questioning technique developed to aid in the understanding of problems experienced in a work environment.  Action learning uses questioning insight to explore problems and identify options to deal with issues and actions to be taken.

Action learning involves a group of people working on real issues in their authority, with the intention of making things happen.  It allows individuals to relate issues they have in a supportive environment and explore their issue in depth.  Individuals make a commitment to tackle their own issue and to support other set members in understanding their issues and challenges.  

Action Learning sets usually have between 6-8 people, meeting every 6-8 weeks over the course of a year for half a day each time.  For those interested East Midlands Councils can facilitate further action learning set meetings, with dates and timings being agreed with the individuals involved.
