Developing a Mentoring and Coaching Strategy Workshop

A workshop to explore and develop a mentoring and coaching strategy for those authorities interested in setting up their own programmes 

The role of mentoring is becoming increasingly popular as an approach to developing individuals, including those undertaking the role of mentor. EMC will be supporting local authorities to develop mentoring within their organisations and we are joining forces with Lis Merrick from Coach Mentoring Ltd to provide this support.

This full day workshop for participants to work through a strategy to implement mentoring/coaching programmes within their authorities, and the steps needed to design really effective programmes.

 This workshop includes a consideration of how the overall macro level HR strategy is informing the programme design and the key steps of:

  1. The rationale for the programme
  2. Influencing stakeholders
  3. Clear recruitment strategy
  4. Communications and marketing
  5. Preparing the participants
  6. Matching process
  7. Supporting the programme
  8. Review and evaluation 

This programme can be tailored to the specific needs of the participants attending, so it is led by their design needs and each participant can work on their own programme(s) during the session.

Lis will discuss the types of programmes that organisations can develop, to include mentoring, internal coaching and coaching in the line programmes.

Lis Merrick

Following a successful career in Human Resources with senior posts for Merrill Lynch, European Investment Banking and The Thomas Cook Group, Lis moved into a consultancy career in mentoring and coaching. She is currently Managing Director of Coach Mentoring Limited, the ISMCP Accreditation Chair (European Mentoring and Coaching Council International Standards for

Mentoring and Coaching Programmes), a Visiting Fellow of the Coaching and Mentoring Research Unit at Sheffield Business School and an EMCC UK Governor. She was the EMCC UK President between June 2015 to June 2018.

She was voted: “Mentoring Person of the Year 2011/12” by Coaching at Work magazine in the UK.

Her experience in mentoring programme design and development is now internationally acclaimed, with over 150 mentoring programmes to her name.

Lis researches, writes and speaks about mentoring and coaching and this work also informs her practice as an executive coach and designer of programmes. Her expertise and research is predominantly in the field of designing programmes with regard to talent management, coaching and mentoring women, supervision in mentoring and coaching and mentoring in a VUCA World.

Lis operates as a coach and consultant on a global basis and has over 30 years’ experience of working in cross-cultural environments. She lectures at Sheffield Business School on the MSc Coaching and Mentoring and on Coach Mentoring Ltd.’s own Post Graduate Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring for Leadership in Organisations, in association with Leeds Business School.

She holds an MBA and an MSc in Coaching and Mentoring from Sheffield Business School. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and the Chartered Management Institute in the UK.
