Action Learning Sets - Taster Session

Local authorities are increasingly using Action Learning as an efficient and innovative way of addressing problems and issues that arise within the work environment.  This half day session aims to enable participants to understand the principles of Action Learning and how individuals and authorities can benefit from the positive and empowering impact, that working within an Action Learning set can provide.

East Midlands Councils offers a range of Action Learning opportunities, from being part of a facilitated action learning set to an Action Learning Facilitation skills programme.  Why not take part in the taster session to discover what Action Learning is all about and how it can help you and/or people in your organisation.

By the end of the session participants will:

  • Understand the principles of action learning
  • Reflect on the benefits of being part of an action learning set
  • Understand and experience the role and impact of questioning insight in understanding problems presented (and how to deal with future problems)
  • Reflect on their future action learning needs

What are the benefits of action learning?

  • provides an opportunity for individuals to make progress on a current challenge
  • techniques to aid in the understanding of current and future issues
  • provides a supportive, yet challenging environment
  • development of skills such as;
    • Problem solving
    • Critical reflection
    • Questioning insight
    • Giving and receiving support
  • Way of working that enables people to work productively together on solving problems

 What is action learning?

Action Learning is a reflective and questioning technique developed to aid in the understanding of problems experienced in a work environment.  Action learning uses questioning insight to explore problems and identify options to deal with issues and actions to be taken.

Action learning involves a group of people working on real issues in their workplace, with the intention of making things happen.  It allows individuals to relate issues they have in a supportive environment and explore their issue in depth.  Individuals make a commitment to tackle their own issue and to support other members in understanding their issues and challenges.

What our previous customers have said about their Action Learning experiences with us….

“It would be advantageous to all employees to experience this type of learning. In particular team workers and those with responsibility for the line management of others would benefit extensively from having the opportunity to examine the problems in their working environment and how they arise”.

“I have learnt to see issues/problems as “new” experiences that, once resolved, will add to my knowledge and skill base”
