East Midlands Apprenticeship Challenge

East Midlands Councils is delighted to bring to the region for the first time the Apprenticeship Challenge, the only professional development opportunity in the East Midlands specifically targeted at Local Government Apprentices and leading to regional recognition.

Date: Thursday 14 May 2020

Location: Pera, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, LE13 0PB

Participation Fee: This event is only open to employees of Local Government Organisations in the East Midlands - £195 + VAT

Are you (or is someone in your team or council):

  • A current or recently qualified (in the last 12 months) Level 2 or 3 Apprentice working in Local Government
  • Looking to push yourself and to test your skills and capability
  • Interested in challenging and developing yourself alongside others in the same position

If so, then the East Midlands Apprentice Challenge is the event for you. Based on the hugely successful “East Midlands Local Authority Challenge” and “Local Authority Challenge” developed by Breckland Training Services, this event will give Apprentices the chance to experience the opportunities, risks and challenges involved in delivering successful local government services.

The Apprentice Challenge is primarily a learning and development event with a competitive edge. Your council can submit as many apprentices as you wish, and we will put them into a mix of teams from other councils on the day - a great way to build their network!

This event will give attendees a range of enhanced knowledge, skills and positive outcomes such as:

  • Building partnerships with relevant organisations or individuals in a variety of different settings
  • Developing inter-personal skills when working with colleagues
  • Developing and practising media handling skills, including drafting press releases, social media management and an introduction to direct media interaction
  • Developing and practicing communication and presentation skills
  • Practicing organisational, team building and time management skills
  • Developing resilience to rapidly changing priorities, demands and timescales
  • Lead to one apprentice being named “Local Government Apprentice of the Year” without the need to complete a myriad of forms, as judgement will be made on the day!

This event is also ideal for those who are keen to develop their professional network by working with Apprentice colleagues from other organisations across the East Midlands.

To sign up for this event and the opportunity to become the East Midlands “Apprentice of the Year 2020”, please click on the Registration button below to SIGN up - this assumes the manager is happy to nominate you!

For those of you who are more used to the team format of the East Midlands LA Challenge, please note that you can sign up an individual apprentice (or as many as you wish).  Individuals will be mixed into teams on the day.

We're also looking for volunteers to support the delivery of the day, we're looking for local authority colleagues with an understanding of the apprenticeship scheme.

They will need to have an appreciation of the behaviours required in core skills such as decision making, time management, assertiveness, presentations, political awareness etc. as well as a good understanding of how local government works within England.

The mentors need to be able to assimilate new tasks quickly, whilst also having an element of flexibility and common sense to deal with ad-hoc questions from the apprentices!

Interested in the role email kirsty.lowe@emcouncils.gov.uk for more information.
