Writing Press Releases

EMC is holding a full day workshop for Councillors and Officers on Writing Press Releases.

Whether you’re an officer or a councillor, a well written news release can get you in the editorial media for free. But how you actually write that news release can make the difference between success and failure. So this workshop has been designed (and updated for the social media world) to help hone the perfect news release. It's aimed at anyone who'd like a bit of publicity for their authority or department but can't afford advertising or the services of an expensive PR company. Don't worry if you've never written a press release before. This course is also for those who've already written quite a few news releases but want to improve their hit rate.

In this workshop we'll help deleagtes understand what makes news so that they can significantly increase the chance of press releases getting published or broadcast.

We'll show delegates how to think like a hack and write like a hack. We'll demonstrate why oven ready is best if not for chicken then for press releases. Plus how to send them, where to send them and when to send them - all factors critical to success. We'll even help delegates to unlock the power of the pyramids - not the Egyptian Pyramids - but the triangle template used to write news stories.

We’ll help colleagues:

  • Understand what makes news through an analysis of print and digital media.
  • Know how human interest is the key feature of a successful story.
  • Recognise the components of a good story in a variety of different outlets both external and internal, specialist and general.
  • Examine their own business areas and identify the existing areas of work most likely to bear fruit journalistically.

Richard Uridge has thrown away, deleted and defaced literally thousands of press releases in his 35 years as a journalist. It's taught him what makes a bad one. And he knows what makes a good one too.
