Writing for Results - how to write documents that get the results you want!

EMC is holding a one day workshop on writing and producing documents on 29 April 2019.

About the workshop

By the end of the course, participants will be able to plan and produce documents that:

  • follow a logical structure
  • are easy to read and achieve a desired result
  • look professional

They will also know how some Word tools can save them valuable time.

The course will cover:

Introduction to course and participants’ objectives


  • "What image do you want to convey?"
  • The five steps to writing
  • Defining the aim and 'Buying Group'; thinking about the reader’s needs
  • Getting started quickly and painlessly
  • Selecting information to achieve the aim and tips to help you to 'make your case'


1)   Emails and letters:

  • Standard structures; the '2-page letter' and attachments
  • Using 'Style Headings' and 'Outline View' on Word
  • Using paragraphs to reflect the structure
  • 10 'Top Tips' for emails

2)   Reports and proposals:

  • Classifying information and structuring ideas: "What story are you telling?"
  • Using Word to 1) create the Table of Contents and 2) manage long documents
  • Writing conclusions, recommendations and summaries
  • Guideline structures for other reports, eg proposal, strategic, investigative

Writing clearly and concisely

  • Using words that are correct, simple, necessary, specific and active
  • Sentence length: how long is too long?
  • Using bullet points and checking parallelism
  • Using positive language and focusing on solutions
  • Using Transactional Analysis to define the tone
  • Handling complaints and 'bad news' letters

Grammar, punctuation and spelling: reviewing the key principles

Layout and presentation

  • Page layout and typography
  • Presenting facts and figures in an interesting and memorable way
  • Using charts and tables
  • 10 'Top Tips' for writing procedures

Editing, reviewing and close

  • Checklists
  • Proofreading – the ‘four-pass’ method
  • Reviewing actions from the course

The workshop will be led by Kathey Bailey from KBTraining, who also runs our 'Minute Taking', 'Report Writing' and 'Speed and Effective Reading' courses.

This is a very interactive course with lots of practical exercises, so come prepared to participate and also bring some examples of your work to review.
