EMC welcomes with the announcement made by the Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, for the UK’s continued commitment of resettling refugees post 2020 (details here). The new scheme will combine the Vulnerable Person’s Resettlement Scheme, Vulnerable Children’s Resettlement Scheme and Gateway Protection plan with the aim of resettling 5000 refugees in 2020/2021.
The East Midlands has played a significant role in providing refugee resettlement and sanctuary for over 700 refugees who arrived through the Vulnerable Persons and Vulnerable Children’s Resettlement Scheme since 2015 by providing support for new arrivals such as integration into communities, accessing ESOL, providing education and supporting refugees into employment.
Cllr Ivan Ould, Chair of the East Midlands Regional Migration Board said “With the continuation of the resettlement scheme after 2020, it is evident that the UK and specifically the East Midlands have delivered on the promise to resettle the most vulnerable adults and children from the Middle East and North African region. There have been a number of success stories here in the East Midlands, and the warm welcome of our local communities has been an important factor in their successful integration. We look forward to continuing to work with Government in providing further support for this most vulnerable group of people.”
