Councillor Development Newsletter, October 2014 Edition

EMC is offering a variety of development opportunities in October 2014, designed to support Councillors in their roles.  This Councillor Development Newsletter provides an overview of the opportunities available to Councillors in the East Midlands provided by East Midlands Councils in October 2014.

Convincing Communication Skills, 1 October

The Convincing Conversations workshop is designed to look at your communicating and influencing style in terms of how you might come across to others and to develop more effective influencing and communicating skills through a better/more applied understanding of your personality preferences.

Venue – Pera Business Park, Nottingham Road, Melton Mowbray, Leics, LE13 0PB

Timings – 10:00 – 16:30

Costs - £175 for EMC Member authorities

Where are we now? What the changes in Welfare Reform, Housing and Planning mean for local government now, 08 October  

A policy update event exploring the Welfare Reform, Planning and Housing changes. The event will provide an overview of the changes to date and provide analysis of what the changes have had on local government and its residents.

Venue – Melton Borough Council, Parkside, Melton Mowbray, Leics, LE13 1GH

Timings - 10:00 – 15:00

Costs - Free for members of the Regional Programme of Briefing events.

East Midlands Rail Summit, 10 October

The East Midlands Rail Summit, organised by East Midlands Councils will explore the future of rail in the East Midlands.  The event is to be chaired by Pete Waterman, rail enthusiast and member of the HS2 Growth Task Force.  The event will be an opportunity for key decision makers from the region to discuss the importance of rail to the regional and local economy and to raise the profile at a national level.  The event will look to make the case for greater rail investment into the East Midlands.

Confirmed speakers include: Anna Walker, Chair of Office of Rail Regulation; Lilian Greenwood MP, Shadow Rail Minister; David Horne, Managing Director of East Midlands Trains; Phil Verster, Network Rail; and Cllr Jon Collins, Chair of East Midlands Councils.

Venue – The Link Hotel, New Ashby Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 4EX

Successful Councillor Development Workshop, 14 October

A practical opportunity to help you benchmark and make progress on councillor development in your authority.

Venue – Newark & Sherwood District Council

Timings – 18:00 – 20:00 with light refreshments from 17:30

Costs - The cost of attending each session is FREE to EMC subscribing authorities

The Councillor Officer Relationship - building effective member-officer partnerships, 16 October

This session defines clearly how member and officer relations can work to best effect for mutual benefit. This is a lively and interactive session, will provide an opportunity for members and officers to learn together and explore the member/officer relationship.  The half day session will provide those involved with an opportunity to explore and understand the key differences between officers and members.
