Devolution and the Future of Local Government - Devo-Max for the East Midlands?

With Dev-Max for Scotland - what are the implications for our local areas?  From around the country, there is a growing consensus that we need to shift power from Westminster to the local level.

East Midlands Councils is holding a summit on the ‘Future of Local Government and Public Services in the next Parliament’ on 21st November 2014 [details here].

Chaired by John Hess, BBC East Midlands Political Editor; confirmed speakers include Kris Hopkins MP, the Minister for Local Government; Graham Allen MP; David Sparks, Chairman of the LGA; Professor Tony Travers; and Council Leaders from across the East Midlands.

At this event, Tony Travers and Graham Allen MP, Nottingham North MP and Chairman of the Political and Constitutional Reform Committee will open up the debate on devolution and what this could mean for the East Midlands.

As part of this, there is a region-wide consultation on devolution proposals with the launch of a draft ‘prospectus’ [found here].  Cllr Jon Collins, Chairman of East Midlands Councils said,

“Councils call for an ambitious transfer of power from the national to the local level, but this is not power for power’s sake – it’s about ensuring that those closest to local communities have the necessary freedom, flexibility and accountability to plan and deliver effective local services…...

…...Scotland has already been given these powers.  Its population is not that much greater than that of the East Midlands….so there is every reason to believe that councils in the East Midlands, by working together, have sufficient democratic authority and scale to have similar powers.”

The Future of Local Government event will be held on Friday 21st November 2014 at Leicester City Football Club, King Power Stadium, Filbert Way, Leicester, LE2 7FL.
