Electrification to Midland Mainline at Threat

EMC, working with MPs and industry insiders, has learnt that there is significant threat to plans to electrify the Midland Mainline.  With a decision by the Transport Secretary of State likely very soon, MPs led by Nicky Morgan and Lilian Greenwood have secured an emergency adjournment debate (to be attended by the Transport Minister, Paul Maynard) for Monday 7th November.

Council leaders from across the region have already written to the Secretary of State emphasising the importance of this scheme [available here], the substantial benefits its offers to the wider economy, and how any further postponement of cancellation would have significant impacts on wider investment and infrastructure programmes.  Not least, it would be another example of the region yet again losing out on rail investment; latest Government figures show spending per head for London £353, Yorkshire & Humber £98, West Midlands £68 - but the East Midlands is the lowest funded in the country at just £34 per head of the population (less than ⅓ of England average).

Supporting information can be found here, together with a recent publication from Network Rail on ‘Upgrading the Midland Mainline’ - pages 2 & 5 are particularly useful!
