Exploring Community Sponsorship

EMC has the responsibility for working with partners in the region from the statutory, voluntary and private sector to develop and manage the implementation of national asylum and resettlement programmes.

This event will help delegates learn more about the community sponsorship programme, what becoming a community sponsor entails, the application process and the experience of those already engaged in community sponsorship. It will provide networking opportunities for prospective sponsors.

  • To learn more about community sponsorship
  • Understand the application process and the role played by local government and the Home Office
  • Hear from refugees resettled in the UK

Keynote speakers include:

  • Home Office
  • Reset
  • Watnall Road Baptist Church

The Community Sponsorship Scheme was launched in 2016 by the then Home Secretary, Amber Rudd. At the launch, the Archbishop Of Canterbury, Justin Welby said “The full community sponsorship scheme presents churches and other civil society groups with the opportunity to provide sanctuary to those fleeing war-torn places”.

Since then, across the UK, communities have welcomed refugees, working in small groups with government and local authorities to take forward offers of support. Sponsors are responsible for housing for the refugee family, as well as helping them to integrate into life in the UK, access medical and social services, arranging English language tuition and supporting them towards employment and self-sufficiency.

This event aims to bring together government, local authorities and community groups to understand more about Community Sponsorship and how to get involved.
