Mentoring for Mentees

(For Councillors interested in having a Mentor)

East Midlands Councils is holding two half day workshops for Councillors on Mentoring. The first session is for Councillors interested in having a Mentor.

The aim of the session is to explain mentoring and the role of mentors in supporting newly elected Councillors or Councillors experiencing a new role.

What Mentoring is…

The mentor need not be older, wiser or able to open doors for the mentee.  It is more important that you have an objective ear; a genuine interest in what the mentee is doing (and perhaps in development in general); a willingness to spend time discussing the mentee's issues; a willingness and ability to challenge their ideas when appropriate and a willingness to provide personal support when necessary.

What will I be able to do better after the session?

  • Understand the role of a mentor and how a mentor can support a newly elected Councillor or Councillors experiencing a new role
  • Understand the purpose of mentoring and the benefits of mentoring for you, the mentee and the council
  • Be able to decide whether mentoring is for you
  • Understand what makes an effective mentor?
  • You will have an understanding of mentees’ needs
  • Understand the behaviours which will help or hinder effective mentoring

What will the session cover?

  • What you can expect to get from mentoring
  • What mentors do
  • The benefits of mentoring for you, the mentor and the council
  • Choosing a suitable mentor
  • Understanding your learning style
  • Identifying what you need from your mentor
