Coaching (virtually) in a digital age

The East Midlands Coaching Network is holding a very practical CPD session for Coaches on 6 December 2018, on telephone and online coaching.

Ask any coach whether they prefer to work with a client on a face to face basis or on the phone – and a good proportion will quickly say that they prefer to work with someone in person. However, in today’s world with pressures to reduce travel costs, and travel time and indeed leveraging the opportunity of working with people across different locations, coaching on the phone or online can be a really sensible option.  The problem that most coaches anticipate is having to work without seeing the client’s non-verbal behaviour on the phone or technical problems online. You will have the opportunity to share experiences about the challenges of this “virtual” working and how they can be overcome,

This session looks at both phone and online coaching in order to help coaches make the best possible decision on method for them and their coachee. The workshop will help participants explore the benefits of phone coaching, dispel some of the concerns and raise confidence by realising how much more is actually available in a client’s voice than we first realise.   Participants will be invited to use their smartphones to do some practical exercises that will help focus attention to the client’s voice, to their choice of language and to their silences in a way which we normally don’t have the capacity to notice when they are physically present. The online element will provide top tips for building rapport via a live online demo and managing the different challenges of coaching via platforms such as Skype and Zoom. There will be time for general questions and to consider how the learning from the workshop could also be applied in day to day business phone and online conversations.

In March 2017 the East Midlands Coaching network ran a workshop on how to run a telephone coaching session. In that short period of time, the interest in coaching using tools like Skype has grown as internet speeds and connectivity has grown. So, the network has invited experienced coach, Julia Menaul to explore the art and skills of virtual coaching whether via phone or the internet.

The session will be highly practical and all coaches will benefit, whether you plan to coach on the telephone or online or not.

The Facilitator – Julia Menaul

Julia is an experienced and Accredited Executive Professional Coach and Coach Supervisor.  Following a career in L&D she has been running her coaching consultancy for 18 years and works with both private, public and third sector organisations.  Based in Stafford, Julia has a large network of colleagues and clientele across the UK which necessitates a large amount of work either by phone or online. She has been coaching and supervising her clients by phone for over a decade and now runs various meetings and virtual supervision groups via the online platform Zoom. In this interactive workshop, she will share with us her experiences of how she has come to view working remotely as a positive choice for both coach and client.
