East Midlands Local Authority Challenge 2017

The Challenge

On 16 November 2017 East Midlands Councils will once again bring the Local Authority Challenge to the East Midlands. In 2016 South Kesteven District Council became the first Local Authority Challenge Winner for the East Midlands, taking part in the interactive, high pressure exciting development focused competition.

Plans for the 2017 Challenge are well underway, with new scenarios and exciting twists being developed. 2017 will see the introduction of a new award to the Challenge, the Best Partnership Working award, recognising the vital part that partnership working plays in local government.

Local Authority Challenges are taking place across the country with winners in 2016 coming from; City of Wolverhampton Council in the West Midlands, Dorset County Council in the South West and South Norfolk District Council in the East of England.

· Team Development Day Provided by East Midlands Council

· 2 hour Individual Coaching

· 2 hour group coaching session for a team

· Individual Myers Briggs Personality Profile and Feedback

How it all works…...

The challenge is open to teams of six people. Delegates will spend the day as the management team of a fictional local authority, encountering many of the tasks that a real corporate team would deal with. They will have to work as a team, with neighbouring councils and with partner organisations to deliver a new strategy for the council.

They will have to choose which areas to prioritise, deal with politically sensitive issues and still keep their focus on how to give the public the best services with limited resources.

The interactive format ensures an opportunity to learn by doing with the Challenge offering participants the opportunity to:

  • test and hone many skills including interpersonal, communication and time management skills
  • Discover strengths and weaknesses and how to develop them in a safe environment.
  • Use the days experience as an opportunity to help progress to the next level career-wise.
  • be part of an extraordinary (and highly enjoyable) event
  • work with a wide range of colleagues from across our region
