East Midlands Virtual Challenge

0066 WFP3692

The East Midlands Challenge sees teams act as “the management” of a fictional council fraught with issues and opportunities. The ultimate in development for new or aspiring senior staff.

You’ll face real life challenges and scenarios that senior teams might encounter but in a safe learning and developmental environment.
There will be opportunities to collaborate with “other” councils and partners, to develop new skills and hone your craft as you work your way through a day like no other.

The challenge is designed for teams of 6 people (maximum size) from any area of work. Delegates will spend the day as the management team of a fictional authority, taking on the many tasks and challenges that a senior team would.

Teams can be drawn from any level of management where there is an aspiration to develop and grow. The event is open to any team involved in local government delivery; councils, police, fire, health, housing, etc.

Benefits of taking part include:

  • Increased understanding of political “political environment” to develop “political acumen” and a real-life experience of face to face councillor interaction in a pressurised environment
  • Exposure to tasks and situations that senior managers face daily and some that luckily only occur occasionally
  • An opportunity to put analytical and problem solving skills and tools to the test
  • To better understand the need to build partnerships with relevant organisations and how to do it by having the opportunity to practise these skills
  • To develop and practise media handling, including press releases, social media management and direct media interaction
  • An opportunity to practice communication and presentation skills when under deep scrutiny
  • Exposure to intense time management constraints
  • An opportunity to develop resilience to rapidly changing priorities, demands and timescales.

Every person taking part in the challenge (both delegates and role players) do so from home, or wherever they locate themselves during working hours.
All communication between the teams and the people contacting them takes place over Zoom.

Feedback and development:

At the end of the day each team will receive feedback on how they performed and worked together throughout the day, along with a development report shared after the event.  As well as the experience of taking part this event is a competition. Who will be crowned the best “Chief Executive”, “Communications lead”, “Collaborator” or the best overall team?

What they said about the South West Virtual Challenge

We're not the only region to offer this exciting opportunity and colleagues at East Midlands Councils were proud to support the South West Challenge on 14 July 2021.  Feedback from the South West Challenge has been excellent, where Wiltshire Council took away the top prize.  The excellent feedback includes;

“What I didn’t expect was how I would learn from being an assessor. I saw really good team working and thinking on the feet being modelled and it made me re-evaluate some of my working as a chief executive. In seeing the strategic role through the eyes of a Leader it has made me think about how I work and how I could improve on that and how I can improve my relationship with the Leader for the benefit of both of us and Council as a whole.”
