Chairing Skills for Councillors
Session Audience:
This 2.5-hour virtual session has been developed for Councillors who are interested in developing their chairing skills.
Suitable for chairs or vice-chairs, the aim of the programme is to provide participants with tips and techniques associated with being a skilled chair of a meeting.
Programme Outlines
By the end of the session, delegates will be able to:
- Identify the role and responsibilities for being an effective chair
- Plan and prepare for a meeting
- Open a meeting and set the scene
- Structure discussions for logic and flow
- Communicate confidently
- Manage participation
- Close the meeting positively.

Session Facilitator
The session is led by Miranda Smythe, from the Baikie-Wood Consultancy Ltd, who has 30 years’ experience in writing and developing personal development programmes. Most recently Miranda has developed and presented programmes which focus on chairing online meetings, involving training over 1,000 participants from the public, private and educational sectors in the skills associated with virtual meetings.
In addition to her formal role, Miranda is also involved in local community development activities. She is Chair of a local homelessness charity and has been instrumental in developing and facilitating community leadership programmes in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.
Cost of Session
EMC Members – £80.00 + VAT per person
£90.00 per person for Associate Members; and
£110.00 per person for non-members.
