Session Audience:
This 2.5-hour session has been developed for Councillors in the East Midlands, who are interested in developing their chairing skills in face to face, virtual and hybrid settings. It is suitable for both chairs and vice chairs.

Session Content and Approach
This development session will provide participants with tips and techniques associated with being a skilled chair of a virtual, physical or hybrid meeting.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

• Identify the role, responsibilities and skills for being an effective chair.
• Plan and prepare for a meeting – both face to face and virtual.
• Open a meeting and set the scene.
• Structure agenda items and discussions for logic and flow.
• Communicate confidently including keeping the meeting on track!
• Encourage and Manage participation.
• Close the meeting positively.

Session Facilitator
The session is led by Miranda Smythe, from the Baikie-Wood Consultancy Ltd, who has 30 years’ experience in writing and developing personal development programmes. Most recently Miranda has developed and presented programmes which focus on chairing online meetings, involving training over 1,000 participants from the public, private and educational sectors in the skills associated with virtual meetings.

In addition to her formal role, Miranda is also involved in local community development activities. She is Chair of a local homelessness charity and has been instrumental in developing and facilitating community leadership programmes in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.

Cost of Session

EMC Members – £75.00 + VAT per person
£85.00 per person for Associate Members; and
£105.00 per person for non-members.
