The course focusses on equipping social workers with the case law, guidance and best practice principles when responding to spontaneous arrivals. Throughout the course we will examine the different pathways of spontaneous arrival referrals, explore the most recent case law judgments and why Local Authorities should consider developing a specific policy to manage these referrals.

The course is an online interactive event with a mixture of presentations, videos, quizzes and activities with opportunities to ask questions throughout. This is CPD certified course and once completed, delegates will receive a certificate of attendance, which can be uploaded onto Social Work England as part of their ongoing learning record.
Course Facilitator:
Sarah Edwards is a qualified and registered social worker with over 10 years practice experience, working for both Local Authorities and as an independent social worker. She specialises in working with unaccompanied asylum-seeking children, completing Merton compliant age assessments, delivering training and covering the management of the National Transfer Scheme in the East of England.
Sarah has a wealth of experience liaising with both solicitor firms and Local Authorities when instructed to complete both Merton compliant age assessments and best interest’s assessments, for children whose family members are subject to deportation orders. She also has an extensive understanding of the legislation and guidance, that she constantly reviews.
Her experience also extends to care planning for young people who are claiming asylum, which involves the implementation of Triple Planning processes. She has completed many Human Rights assessments for clients with numerous cultural backgrounds and countries of origin. Her long-standing experience of working with looked after children and care leavers allows her to complete initial viability assessments to examine whether unaccompanied asylum-seeking children can be reunited with family members located in the UK, and also viability assessments to consider identified extended family members within the Care Proceedings environment.
Sarah’s extensive understanding of the immigration and asylum process, combined with her adoption of best practice principles, give her a comprehensive grounding when training delegates in the field of immigration social work. For ISWS Ltd, she imparts her specialist knowledge and experience when delivering amongst others, Age Assessment, Brief Enquiry, Triple Planning & Human Rights Assessment/Appeals Rights Exhausted Training.
