Mentor Workshop: How to get the most from a mentoring relationship

By attending this workshop delegates will be able to:

  • Achieve a common understanding of the role of the mentor
  • Have increased awareness of mentoring skills and behaviours, including ethical boundaries
  • Develop their skills and confidence so that they feel able and equipped to take on the role of a mentor
  • Understand how the mentoring scheme will work in practice

This 4 hour virtual workshop will cover the following content:

What is Mentoring? (2 hours)

  • Defining mentoring and distinguishing it from coaching, counselling and managing.
  • Understanding the roles of the Mentor and Mentee, setting both parties’ expectations and acceptable behaviours.
  • Understanding what the mentor should and shouldn’t do, identifying ethical boundaries and confidentiality rules.
  • Overviewing the core phases of mentoring relationships and the typical process (start, middle and end).
  • Discussing the chemistry and contracting phase, how to ensure the best fit with your mentee, agree on ways of working and goal setting.

The Key Skills of a Mentor (2 hours)

  • Understanding the relationship between the Mentor and Mentee and the context in which the relationship operates.
  • Analysing the key skills of a mentor and the order in which they should be applied.
  • Outlining a range of mentoring approaches and the intent of a mentoring conversation.
  • The LEAP Model – An introduction to a Mentoring conversation and how it differs from a management one (practical exercise)

A highly practical and engaging session delivered by Jo Desborough of Unblocked Thinking, it will provoke thought and understanding as well as the practical application of strategies and methods to maximise the abilities of your coachees.

Key Objectives:

  • Understand the core concepts of neurodiversity and neurodivergence.
  • Explore why traditional coaching models may not always serve neurodivergent clients.
  • Learn adaptable, evidence-based techniques to create more inclusive coaching spaces.
  • Practise inclusive communication styles and coaching behaviours.

As part of the workshop, you will receive a workbook entitled Adapting Coaching for Neurodivergent Clients”. This workbook includes:

  • Definitions and key concepts around neurodiversity.
  • Practical coaching tools, including Transactional Analysis, Clean Language, and strengths-based approaches.
  • Breakout exercises to practise inclusive coaching methods.
  • Reflection prompts to personalise learning and identify action steps.
  • Additional resources for continued professional development.

The training is interactive, with opportunities for skills practice and real-world application, ensuring you leave with strategies you can implement straight away.
